Coaching Staff

Ryan Bown – Head Coach

Mr. Bown is an assistant coach at perennial Division 2 power Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. “I am very excited to be part of the Carolina Stingers. Myself and the other coaches are looking forward to getting started and acheiving our goals both on the field and in the community.

A 2004 graduate of Ursinus College, Bown appeared in 30 games with 21 starts while posting a 14-4 record and a 3.22 ERA in three seasons with the Bears from 2002-04. He also totaled 145 strikeouts, five complete games, three shutouts and three saves in 148.1 innings pitched.

Bown currently teaches physical education in the Waynesboro School District at Mowrey Elementary School. He lives in Chambersburg with his wife Rachel and their son Braydon. Rachel is a 2004 Shippensburg graduate and former member of the Lady Raider softball team.

Ben Leonard – Assistant Coach


Coach Leonard is a 2001 Graduate of Waynesboro High School.  He set the school record for the most hits in a season in 2000 and finished 4 year varsity career with a 391 career batting  AVG.

He went on to be an Outfielder at Shippensburg University in 2002. Coach Leonard attended Hagerstown Community College in 2003 where his team won the MJCC D1 conference.  After his stint at HCC, he transferred to Shepherd University where he was an outfielder on 2004 team that won the WVIAC.

Coach Leonard has been coaching at the high school level for 4 years now (3 as a head coach) as well as a summer and fall player development team called the Mid-Atlantic Mets.  For the Mets he has been the head coach and program outfield instructor/ Hitting instructor as well as the assistant recruiting coordinator for the entire program.

In his 4 year coaching career he has had over 75 guys sign on to play baseball at the collegiate level as well as had one drafted and currently playing in the minor leagues.

Coach Leonard teaches Health at Boonsboro High School in Washington County MD and resides in Waynesboro, PA

Jay Perry – Assistant Coach


Jay Perry has been the JV/Varsity baseball coach at Canton High School in Canton, PA for the past 15 years. Perry’s specialty and focus is coaching infielders and pitchers. While coaching at Canton, Perry has lead two teams undefeated throughout their season and racked up 3 league championships. He has also helped the team qualify for district a total of 7 years.

Perry also coached a highly successful travel team from Northern PA. The team placed Elite 8 in ECTB world series in ‘08 and won 60% of tournaments entered in the season. In ‘09 he lead the team further, making it to the final four in the ECTB World Series.

Nina Atwood – Photographer and Host Parent

Nina Atwood has been the Stingers’ photographer for the past 3 years. She
and her husband, Toby, are host parents and baseball fanatics. They have 3
adult children and 7 grandchildren. None of them are near as interested in
baseball as Nina would like so she lives vicariously through her hosted boys
and her pictures.

Andrew Drace – Clubhouse Guy

Andrew Drace, from Santa Cruz, CA,  loves the  Minnesota Twins and is getting married later this summer to Amanda Ninemire.   Drace loves to travel to different national parks and has been in Alaska for 2 years driving tour busses.
